Families and Caregivers Are Stretched to the Limit
Canadians living with disabilities and long-term illnesses face daily battles just to survive. Many cannot work, access care, or meet basic needs. Their caregivers are stretched to the limit, managing bills, childcare, and round-the-clock care, often sacrificing their own health and stability.
Since 2013, your generosity has touched 5,977 of your Muslim neighbours with disabilities.
With your local Zakat and Sadaqah, families receive food, housing, medical support, and essential care. You lift the weight from caregivers and restore hope and security to those who feared they had nowhere to turn.
The Need is Urgent
1 in 4 Canadians provide care to someone with a long-term health condition or disability, often balancing work, household responsibilities, and financial strain.
(Statistics Canada)
66 % of people with disabilities reported at least one unmet need for essential support like healthcare, medication, devices, or daily living help.
(Statistics Canada)
Nearly half of Canadian adults live with one or more chronic diseases — such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, mood disorders, or heart disease — which can affect daily activities and quality of life.
(Statistics Canada)
150,000 childrenare living in foster homes, institutional settings, or with extended familyas a result ofabuse, neglect, or abandonment. (2016 Census)
Even when they work, the odds remain stacked against them. Single mothers earn 19% less per hour than mothers in two-parent homes — a gap that has barely changed in nearly three decades. (Statistics Canada)
A child in a single-parent home faces nearly four
times the risk of poverty
than children in two-parent homes. And when that parent is a mother — especially an immigrant mother — the rate of poverty rises to 26.5%, the highest in the country. (Statistics Canada)
Fahad's Story
Fahad was barely ten years old when his father walked out on his family, leaving behind a wife and three young sons. Overnight, their childhood disappeared.
Their mother, Salma, did not speak English, had no work permit, and was ineligible for childcare benefits. With the little government support they received, she had to choose between paying for food or rent.
Basic needs like food, clothing, and utilities became a constant worry.
Fahad’s older brother couldn’t bear to see his younger brothers hungry, so he dropped out of school to help provide for the family.
Desperate for help, Salma reached out to NZF Canada. With your support, we were able to provide the family with essentials: school clothes for the children, nutritious food, help with rent and utilities, and emotional support. Slowly, life began to feel a little more stable.
Often, Fahad would help his mother communicate with us, sometimes sharing his small dreams for the future. “I wish I had a bike,” he once wrote. While we cannot fulfill every dream, together we can make sure children like Fahad have the essentials to survive, grow, and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Yusuf’s Story
When Yusuf first came to NZF Canada, he was simply trying to keep his family afloat.
Your local giving helped cover essentials—food, rent, and bills. Then he came back. And then again. Eventually, our caseworker paused and asked what was really happening.
That’s when Yusuf unburdened his heart to us.
His wife was battling advanced cancer. Every dollar he earned, every benefit he received, went towards her treatment.
“How can I not try?” he said.
“She’s my wife. She’s the mother of my children.”
Yusuf wasn’t avoiding responsibility. He was working. He was trying. He was carrying more than any family should have to carry alone.
No one wants to rely on Zakat or Sadaqah long-term. Families come to NZF Canada because they are stretched to the limit, and need your support to get through crisis with dignity.
You can be the reason families like Yusuf’s don’t have to face these moments alone.
