Every year, Canadian families experience the excitement and stress of the back-to-school season. While it’s a time for new beginnings, the costs and pressures associated with returning to class can be overwhelming—especially for underserved families, newcomers, and single-parent households. Despite government benefits, many vulnerable children and families continue to struggle, making local back-to-school support essential for helping every child in our community start the year on an equal footing.
Inflation has driven the cost of living higher for all Canadians, but back-to-school shopping hits vulnerable families hardest. According to Global News, parents are increasingly stressed about finding affordable school supplies, clothing, and technology . Each year, Canadians spend an average of $300 on back-to-school shopping , and for families already living paycheque to paycheque, these seasonal expenses can mean sacrificing essentials or falling deeper into debt. Research also shows that while support like the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and the new
National School Food Program help, they don’t close the gap for many families—especially those with multiple children or those new to Canada
Underserved families face significant financial barriers that go beyond the classroom. In neighborhoods with lower median incomes, many children arrive at school without access to nourishing food, appropriate clothing, or essential supplies like backpacks and notebooks. Food insecurity means some students start their day hungry, reducing their ability to concentrate and learn. The cost of school essentials, from lunch to basic stationery, can be difficult for families to cover, especially for single-parent households already stretched by high living costs and limited work flexibility. These resource gaps leave children at a disadvantage before lessons even begin, making support for basic needs more critical than ever.
Local back-to-school support bridges the gap left by federal and provincial programs. Community-led initiatives provide immediate, targeted relief: school supply drives, meal programs, mentorship opportunities, and culturally competent resources that adapt to the specific needs of families in each neighborhood. Research from Toronto neighborhood programs highlights how community-driven efforts create welcoming spaces and directly address the effects of systemic discrimination, poverty, and trauma Eizadirad, 2025.
As government resources are stretched thin, community action is not just helpful—it’s absolutely critical. By supporting local back-to-school campaigns, you ensure that all students, especially those from underserved families, newcomers, and single-parent households, get the essentials they need to start school strong. Every backpack donated, every meal provided, and each new friendship formed through community support ensures that the we build a strong Muslim community where every single member knows they are cared for. By providing these
foundational resources, we help create a sense of home and stability, so children can focus on learning and adapting, rather than what they lack.
Let's work together to support Canadian families where the need is greatest. Back-to-school support is not just about school supplies—it's about equity, dignity, and opportunity for every child.
