Farah’s Story
Holding On to Hope - How Community Helped Farah Stay Home
Farah is a 42-year-old mother doing everything she can to hold her family together. After a painful divorce, she suddenly found herself raising three children on her own, shouldering the heavy responsibilities of parenting, finances, and an uncertain future without a safety net.
As weeks turned into months, Farah’s job applications went unanswered and interviews grew scarce, and the long stretch of unemployment made every day feel more uncertain. Bills began to pile up on the kitchen table, and credit cards that once filled the gaps were maxed out and eventually cancelled, leaving Farah with fewer and fewer options. Each day became a careful calculation: how to keep the lights on, how to pay the phone bill, what to cut so there was still enough for groceries.
The fear that haunted her most was the thought of losing their home. She knew too well what it meant to live in a shelter with children, and the possibility of going back felt unbearable. The walls that once echoed with her children’s laughter now also held her quiet worry—what would happen if one more bill went unpaid, if one more notice arrived at the door.
By the time Farah reached out for help, she was exhausted and emotionally drained. She was not looking for luxury or comfort; she was simply looking for relief, a small space to breathe without the constant fear of choosing between rent, food, and heat. For many single-parent families in Canada, this is an all-too-common reality, with 40% of single-parent households fearing they do not have enough income to cover their basic needs. Through your generosity, National Zakat Foundation Canada stepped in at this critical moment. With your Zakat and Sadaqah, NZF was able to provide Farah with food support and cover essential utility bills, helping her feed her children and keeping their home warm and safe. For Farah, this was more than a financial intervention; it was a lifeline.
In a country where many families are struggling with the rising cost of living, those led by single mothers are often among the most vulnerable. Your support transforms statistics into real stories of dignity preserved and homes protected. For families like Farah’s, your contribution is not just charity—it is the difference between instability and a chance to rebuild with hope. (The Salvation Army)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement.”
