Standing by Our Elders: Sameer’s Story of Loss, Dignity, and Hope

A Lifetime Behind Him, Starting from Zero
At 68 years old, Sameer never imagined he would be starting again from zero. Once a pharmacist with a long career behind him, he had built what many would consider a stable life—a respected profession, a home, close family ties, and savings he hoped would carry him through his later years.
But over time, a series of personal, financial, and family struggles unraveled the life he had known. He lost his job and the routine that had structured his days, then his savings were gradually depleted by circumstances beyond his control. Strains within his family deepened until his marriage ended and his relationship with his only daughter broke down, leaving him without the support system he had once relied on.
With his career gone, his home no longer his own, and his closest relationships fractured, Sameer eventually made the difficult decision to come to Canada as a senior single man. He arrived with years of experience and a strong work ethic—but very few resources. His new reality was simple and harsh: survive alone and try to rebuild from nothing in a country where no one knew his past.
The Challenge of Shelter in Old Age
In this new chapter of his life, Sameer’s most urgent concern was not comfort, but shelter. As an elderly, divorced man living alone, he needed a safe, stable place to sleep, recover, and think about the future. Without steady income or savings, even a small rented room became a heavy financial burden.
For seniors, housing insecurity is especially frightening. At his age, the risks of homelessness, illness, and isolation are much more serious, and the path back to stability is often harder and slower. Sameer was willing to work—“any kind of job,” as he says—but until he could find something, the question remained: how would he keep a roof over his head long enough to stand on his feet again?
Reaching Out for Help—For the First Time
Sameer’s story carries another kind of weight: this was the first time in his life he had ever asked for financial help. A man who once provided for others now found himself in the vulnerable position of seeking assistance just to stay sheltered.
He turned to National Zakat Foundation Canada after hearing about it from community members. One of the main reasons he chose NZF was trust. He believed his information would remain secure and confidential, known ultimately to Allah alone and handled with respect. For someone who had lost almost everything, preserving his dignity still mattered deeply.
When Community Giving Protects Dignity
Through your generosity, NZF was able to help Sameer with what he needed most: stability. He received support with rent to secure the room he is currently renting, ensuring that he did not lose the little shelter he had managed to find, along with a modest financial cushion to help him cover essentials while he searched for work.
This support is more than money; it is a lifeline. It gives a sincere elderly man the chance to breathe, to look for employment at his own pace, and to rebuild without the constant fear of ending up on the street. It tells him that, even in a new country, he is not invisible—that his community sees him, values his years of effort, and stands by him in his time of need.
Still Searching, Still Trusting Allah
Today, Sameer is still actively looking for a job and says he is ready for any kind of work that will allow him to stand on his own feet again. Despite the heavy losses he has endured, he remains hopeful and believes that Allah will support him through this difficult period.
He is not asking to return to his former status or wealth; he is asking for the chance to live in good standing once more, with shelter, stability, and dignity. When we give from what we love to support elders like Sameer, we honour their lifetime of effort and uphold our responsibility to care for the most vulnerable among us.
This Ramadan and beyond, remember the seniors in our community who are quietly struggling. Give locally and give from what you love.
