Al Jazeera - Ramadan in the shadows: Fasting while poor

"I fast to empathize with the poor". We hear Muslims saying this when non-Muslims ask us why we fast during the month of Ramadan, but which poor are we empathizing with: the poor millions of miles away in third-world countries or the poor in our own neighbourhoods?

Muslims in North America often donate to poor Muslims overseas than to poor Muslims in their own country. We assume that because we live in Canada or America that needy Muslims do not exist, but there are thousands of Muslims around us who are suffering from food insecurity and low incomes.
